I have been using Samba 3 for years… used it as a¬†PDC for Windows XP to Windows 7. I principally use it to get my Unix/Linux (NIS/YP) users the ability to log in to the Windows box. I was willing to give Samba 4 a try. I wanted to use it as a PDC, now called AD/DC (Active Directory/Domain Controler), to permit login into Windows 8.x PC. So here his the story of the download of Samba 4.1.x source – it’s compilation and it’s configuration on RHEL 6.5.

Having this error on a brand new install on fedora 20 I searched disparately on forums and on bugzilla.redhat.com… I found a bunch of posts about patching fedora 15 but none was relevant since I was using Fedora 20 and I had an updated version of ypbind…

Life just got better! It’s so nice I need to share this with you guys.

What do you know about file systems? Do you know ZFS?
– No: I suggest you learn it quickly ūüėČ
– Yes: but only on Solaris or FreeBSD… Well the big news is NO MORE it’s now available on Linux.

Access to Flexlm license server via a SSH tunnel  with port forwarding is possible but require you to do some tweak in Windows or Linux client.

Using SSH or OpenSSH for Windows¬†or Linux ¬†is easy to create a port forwarding. Let say we want to forward all requests to a ¬†remote server license port but pass all requests via ¬†a local port. We will then create a local port 2300 on the localhost and forward it requests to the remote server’s license port.¬†This can be done like this…

Network card aggregation with Linux RHEL 6.x, (also called Port bounding or Channel Bonding) it mean the merging of two (or more) network card into one single virtual card (bond0 in this case). This is a non exhaustive information, a mini how-to. For more detail see¬†Redhat documentation. Changes were made between RHEL 5.x and 6.x — here is an updated version (links also updated october 2016).

I found myself in a situation where I use ssh to remotely connect to Solaris or Linux server from a Windows7 OS. After been connected I had the problem of not been able to use the arrow keys to navigate up and down in the command line history.

Here is a start-up script for a flexlm license based software.

Using the start option the script will call itself only to start the daemon as a limited right user called flexlm, it will (switch users) with su. While the startsu will simply start it as the actual current user.

Following my previous blog about “Creating Raid5 under Linux RHEL5.4 using md, lvm and ext4 filesystem.”

I will add some information on how to test if the raid actually does work well. Here is how I did it.

Mar 102010

Here is all the information you will need to create a Raid-5 under Linux with an to create an ext4 partition using LVM or not. I will also add all the commands to create a Volume Group (LVM).

More information: I should first mention that I use a RHEL 5.4 like distribution. RHEL 5.4 means ‚ÄúRed Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4‚ÄĚ it can also be ‚ÄúScientific Linux 5.4‚ÄĚ or ‚ÄúCentOS 5.4‚ÄĚ since both those Linux distributions are the exact same to RHEL, only they are recompiled from its freely available source. RHEL is not free since you need to paid for license and/or support while the other two are free. Per Linux license Red Hat has to make their source available. It was also successfully tested on RHEL 5.5

Plain and simple you will first need to select a computer add several disks of your choice. I used 1.5TB SATA-3 drive speeding at 300 MB/s. I installed them in a Dell T610 server which has hot swappable disk bracket on the front.
